Solskjaer blasts Man United’s complacency after they slump to Basaksehir defeat

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer slammed his side’s complacency after they were beaten Champions League new boys Istanbul Basakesehir.

United were the overwhelming favorites going into the game after beating last year’s finalists Paris Saint-Germain and thrashing RB Leipzig 5-0 at Old Trafford last week.

But some poor defending saw Solskjaer’s side slip to an unlikely defeat and the manager was not impressed with the performance of his side.

‘The performance wasn’t good enough,’ said Solskjaer.

‘Against a team that worked and ran and well they hit us on the break a couple of times and score a couple of goals like you sometimes doing Europe when you don’t defend well enough.

‘We play a short corner and forget about the man up top and that’s unforgivable and of course the second one as well we’re not very well organized to counter-press and win the ball back when we play in.

‘Two soft goals to giveaway and then we didn’t have enough to come back second half. We had 45 minutes to save something from the game – we threw everything at it but couldn’t break them down.’

‘It’s set us back a lot (the defeats against Arsenal and Basaksehir), you get a reality check every time you play football here.

‘Nothing becomes history quicker than a game of football. You don’t just turn up and get three points in the Champions League that’s shown here today.

‘We have played against lots of good individuals in good teams and we weren’t good enough that’s it.

‘It’s not easy to be positive now, of course, it isn’t when you’ve just lost the way you did but these players are good players and we have a chance on Saturday morning to get going again.’

Basaksehir took the lead in the 12th minute when United lost the ball from their own corner. The ball was cleared up to Demba Ba, who had been left all on his own on the halfway line, and the striker was able to sprint through on goal to finish past Dean Henderson.

Edin Visca made it 2-0 in the 40th minute before Anthony Martial pulled a goal back just before half-time.

But United managed just one more shot on target in the second half as they struggled to break down a stubborn Basaksehir side.

Solskjaer will now take his side to Goodison Park to face Everton, who are looking to get back to winning ways after defeats against Southampton and Newcastle.
