Journalists urged to intensify reportage on cocoa sector

Journalists have been urged to increase coverage on issues affecting the cocoa industry, Ghana’s largest foreign exchange earner, to ensure that stakeholders act quickly.

Mr. Joseph Opoku Gakpo, Deputy Secretary-General of the Ghana Agricultural and Rural Development Journalists Association (GARDJA) said that cocoa is a major contributor to the Ghanaian economy, so special attention needs to be paid to this area.

He said that farmers, especially cocoa bean producers, face numerous challenges, and these challenges must be highlighted to ensure that they receive the necessary attention and support.

Mr. Gakpo is speaking at a cocoa promotion training seminar held in Fumesua, Ejisu, organized GARDJA for selected journalists in Ashanti.

The training conducted in collaboration with SEND in Ghana provides a platform for participants and stakeholders to discuss ways that can support farmers to make cocoa production more sustainable.

Mr. Gakpo expressed dissatisfaction with the poverty of the cocoa growing communities, although cocoa beans have invested in ensuring their well-being.

He said that GARDJA’s main goal is to ensure that the media pay more attention to the agricultural sector, and it is ready to assist reporters in forecasting the cocoa sector to improve the living conditions of farmers.

Mr. Gakpo said that the association will continue to organize more such training and field trips for journalists in different regions of the country, and provide them with more cocoa-related news reports.

Consultant Nelson Kpodo-Tay said that cocoa bean cultivation is labor-intensive, so more energetic people are needed to take on these tasks.

He urged young people to engage in cocoa cultivation, which is very profitable, to help increase their income and increase the country’s cocoa production.
