South African medics using unproven worm drug to treat Covid-19

As Pumza Fihlani states, the drug Ivermectin, which has been touted some as an effective coronavirus cure despite being scientifically unproven, is at the center of a legal fight in South Africa, where some doctors want it approved for human use.

Many South Africans are desperate for something that will lessen the effect of the third wave of coronavirus infections, which is anticipated in the immediate future.

With a vaccine campaign that has not yet reached many of the continent’s most vulnerable, there are fears that the continent’s worst-affected country will suffer even more as the weather cools and winter approaches.

Coronavirus has killed over 52,000 people, and although new infections are now rare, they are not disappearing.

In this regard, the drug Ivermectin, which is used to treat parasitic worms, has gained a lot of coverage. Some doctors have recommended it to coronavirus patients, citing anecdotal evidence that it can help alleviate some of Covid-19’s worst symptoms.

However, the drug’s manufacturer, as well as some of the country’s most eminent scientists, have all cautioned against using it to treat coronavirus.
