Congo-Brazzaville’s opposition leader returns

Congo-Brazzaville opposition leader Jean-Marie Mokoko (Jean-Marie Mokoko) returned to Turkey a month after receiving treatment in the Turkish capital Ankara.

The opposition leader was serving 20 years in prison when he fell ill and was taken to Turkey for treatment.

His lawyer, Yvon Eric Ibouanga, told AFP that he was allowed to see Mr Mukoko after returning home and that he was in good physical condition.

Lawyers say they are working hard to demand his release.

Mr Mokoko was charged with undermining national security and illegal possession of weapons and ammunition and was imprisoned in 2019.

The former chief of staff of the armed forces ranked third in the 2016 presidential election. Denis Sassou Nguesso was controversially declared the champion.
